Areas of impact
Complementary health services: Placi is filling the gap in the Brazilian healthcare system between traditional acute care hospitals and home care, providing an alternative to long-term care patients and their families. Currently, the long-term care patients in Brazil are faced with the binary choice of a prolonged traditional hospital stay or a release to home care. By offering a complementary healthcare solution, Placi gives the patients, as well as their families an option for specialized and affordable care
Comprehensive patient care: Placi’s hospitals have a welcoming, home-like environment combined with an infrastructure, clinical and specialized staff tailored to provide long-term care. Patients have access to therapy rooms, solariums, common areas and gardens in order to socialize, participate in celebrations and group activities, and engage with their families, which benefits their recovery process. Based on a “high touch low tech approach”, each patient is evaluated in order to establish custom therapeutic goals and a medical plan. There are several specialized therapies, including physiotherapy, occupational, art and music therapy, and cinotherapy, among others.
Fostering quality and sector development: The transitional hospital healthcare is not yet well established in Brazil. Placi is pioneering the business model, developing and setting quality standards. The Company’s facilities operate under a hospital license, which requires adherence to strict regulatory standards applicable to traditional hospital. In order to assess and improve the quality of care, Placi has implemented specific protocols and procedures, such as 24-hour camera monitoring of the patients, training staff and family on how to prevent infections and falls, and monitoring the proper use of antibiotics and pain medication to prevent medicine resistance and dependence, among other initiatives. Placi’s team has established a relationship and continuous dialogue with the existing key players, working towards setting up an accreditation association for the new transitional care sector in Brazil.
Employment generation and qualification: The Company currently employs over 200 individuals, including doctors, therapists, nurses, pharmacists, and other professionals. As of the end of 2019, Placi’s workforce included about 70% of female employees. The Company plans to generate further employment to support its growth plan, including first-time employment and volunteering opportunities, broadening the knowledge of long-term care, investing in continuous qualification of its employees, and offering opportunities to enter and grow professionally in healthcare.
Supporting the fight against COVID-19: Placi is currently playing an important role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, admitting patients in the recovery phase, but still requiring professional medical care, and oftentimes ventilators. By transferring these patients to a transitional care facility, the beds at traditional hospitals become available to treat more complex COVID-19 and other non-pandemic related, acute patients.
